The Global G-38R Ceramic Honing Rod is a 10-inch replacement ceramic sharpening rod made in Japan for honing a wide variety of cutlery, large or small. At the current price of $56.98, down from a $119.95 compare-at price, you save over 52% when you buy online at Honed Edge Cutlery – plus coupon EDGE10 takes an additional 10% off.
Hold the rod vertically with the tip anchored on a towel or cutting board. Place the heel of your knife against the ceramic at roughly 15 degrees, then draw the blade down and toward you in smooth strokes, alternating sides. Five to eight light strokes per side realigns the edge. Light pressure is key – ceramic hones by refining, not grinding.
Wipe the ceramic surface with a damp cloth after use. For metal marks and buildup, use a mild abrasive cleaner or a melamine sponge, rinse, and dry thoroughly before storing.
The 10-inch ceramic surface hones chef knives, santokus, paring knives, and most cutlery large or small. It pairs perfectly with Global knives but works on any steel-bladed knife. Note: it is not intended for fully serrated edges.
Steel honing rods realign but ceramic actually refines the edge microscopically. Compared to Global's standard steel rod, the G-38R keeps sharper edges longer between sharpenings.
Current price: $56.98. Compare-at: $119.95. That is $62.97 in savings (52%). Apply coupon EDGE10 for an extra 10% off at checkout.

Works exactly as it should.
Ceramic is the right choice for my Global knives since the steel is softer than German blades. A few passes before each use keeps everything shaving sharp. The 10-inch length handles my chef's knife easily.
My original Global rod cracked after a drop and this one fits the bill as a replacement. Hones smoothly without gouging the edge. Wish it came with a guard or sheath for storage since ceramic is fragile, but performance is solid.
I'd been using a cheap grooved steel rod that was actually dulling my knives. A buddy who worked kitchens told me ceramic is the way, especially for Global's CROMOVA steel. Two or three light strokes per side and my santoku is back to scary sharp. It's light, easy to control, and the handle feels secure even with wet hands. Worth the money.
The ceramic rod itself hones well and my knives respond quickly. However, the plastic handle feels a bit flimsy for a $50+ item, and there's a slight rattle I can't identify. Function over form here, I suppose.
My old 8-inch rod was too short for a 10-inch chef's knife, you end up curving your stroke awkwardly. This length lets you hone the full blade flat. Japan-made quality shows in the finish of the ceramic, very fine and even grit.
Honed gently as instructed, stored carefully, and still developed a hairline crack down the rod within weeks. Maybe a defect. Honing performance was fine while it lasted.
I was intimidated by honing rods but ceramic is more forgiving than steel. A YouTube tutorial and five minutes of practice and I got the angle down. My Global paring knife and chef's knife both benefit. Slightly slippery grip is my only nitpick.
